this friday morning. traffic looking okay. so far, so good. temperatures warming up. >> i'm not ready yet. >> you are about five feet shorter. >> i was having microphone problems and now some cherishes. >> good to see you. >> get ready for a hot run. maybe a record-setting day in term of our heat here in the wash area. a warm start to the day with temperatures in the 70s. right now, here in the district, it is 74 degrees. baltimore at 71 degrees. patuxent naval air station, 69 degrees. ocean city, 73. here a look at the satellite- radar composite for the region. skies are mostly clear except for some fog. some of that fog is thick. it is primarily in eastern portions of the viewing area from d.c. eastward. not so much to the west but wouldn't be surprised if some more forms here and there. we'll keep our eyes open for that. that might slow your commute down a little bit.

here is your forecast for today. hot one. when i mentioned a record, the record high for today set way back in 1970 is 94 degrees. we're thinking we will get to 94 or 95 degrees today. obviously, we would tie or break the record and it will be humid as well. more details on that coming up in just a little bit. >> let's see if things are heating up on the roadways. julie wright has your latest on traffic. what we're talking about right now would be the fog and we are tealing with that especially over in prince george's county east of the city. be careful if you are traveling between andrews air force base and your exits there in landover. no incidents to report right now top stretch of the beltway between college park and bethesda. southbound # 70, again, awe little bit of that fog is starting to roll in over on to the west side of town. this is a live shot coming south of 118 headed out towards mva. overnight roadwork at 124 cleared so no problems there. overnight roadwork still in place on the beltway at 66.

that is where they were diverting traffic westbound. 395 coming across the 14th street bridge, nice and ease you right now with no incidents reported. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. our big story, investigators back on the scene of a defense -- devastating fire in manassas. three homes burned and still unclear what started the fire. firefighters say it will likely take some time to figure that out because of the magnitude of the blaze. >> the fire started at a home around 3:30 yesterday afternoon and quickly spread to the neighboring homes. it took an hour and a half to bring that fire under control. >> like a war, like a war. thank god that nobody got hurt. >> we are looking to find out what the impact is going to be

and what the cause was. >> investigators from the federal government have been called in to assist and the red cross is helping the displaced families. for the first time in nearly 100 years, virginia has put a woman to death. theresa lewis' execution was the first after woman in the united states in five years. she was convicted of arranging the killings of her husband an stepson to cash in on a $250,000 insurance payment. both the trigger men were sentenced to life in prison. one committed suicide in jail back in 2006. >> the execution of theresa lewis has been carried out in the manner as prescribed by the laws of the commonwealth of virginia. death was pronounced at 9:13 p.m. there were no complications. >> tonight, the machinery of death in virginia extinguished the beautiful child-like and loving human spirit of theresa lewis. >> lewis is the 1th woman executed since the u.s. resumed

the death penalty in 1976. the last woman to die in virginia was a 17-year-old virginian. she was put to death in the electric chair in 1912. police have made an arrest in the murder of a d.c. waiter and college student neil godleski. he was shot to death while riding home from work last month. police believe the killer was 17-year-old eric foreman. he was 16 at the time of the killing. the district's presumptive next mayor sat for a much- anticipated meeting with michelle rhee yesterday. rhee kept quiet but gray announced the meeting was productive although no decisions have been made about rhee's future. >> the chancellor and i just finished what i think was a very product yugoslav meeting. i think one of the things we both agree upon is that we want the best for our kids in the

district of columbia. we will have those conversations in a later discussion. we did not talk about chancellor rhee staying or going. >> convincement gray maps to meet with michelle rhee in the next couple of week and says no personnel decisions will be announced until after the election. stephen colbert has a meeting with lawmakers this morning. he is testifying before a house committee on immigration and let's get more now from fox 5's sherry ly. she is live on capitol hill. it will be an interesting one, sherry. >> reporter: it sure will. you know, a lot of people will be watching. stephen colbert may be a comedian but this hearing and his appearance on capitol hill is no joke. while you may not think he is the ideal person as an expert witness on illegal immigration, anyone who has watched his show knows that he recently joined up with the united farm workers

to take the job of a migrant work ore a farm. colbert's nightly report featured the ufw's tax our jobs campaign which invites u.s. residents to replace illegal immigrants working on farms. the comedy central host spent a day working in the field being picking beans and sorting corn in a packing house. he will appear with the ufk to testify about his experience before a house judiciary committee. the hearing called protecting america's harvest will folkous food security in the u.s. colbert will hold a repeat performance here in washington next month during dueling rallies with jon stewart. about 60,000 people are expected for the october 30th rallies on the national mall, up from the original number of 25,000. that hearing today in the rayburn building starts at 9:30 this morning a cording to fox

another one or two. let's get the record. we'll start with yesterday's high temperatures. yesterday was day 65 because the high temperature at reagan national was 93 degrees. at dulles, was this a tie for a record or was it a new record. >> new record at dulles airport. 9 # degrees. 89degrees was the high temperature in baltimore. all right. current temperatures around the region, can we get the prompter switched there? 7 # degrees now in d.c. # 8 in gaithersburg. 7 # in annapolis, quantico is at 69. fredericksburg, winchester at 68 degrees at this hour. here also look at the satellite- radar composite for the region. we are losing one frame here at the end but i assure you all the weather out there is not just disappearing. we do have clouds up to the north and out to the west. we are mostly cloud-free. our main problem this morning is fog. some dense fog off to the east. primarily east of the district and in some of the low-lying areas and near the waterways.

there may somebody fog forming to the west but when i came in did not see it and have not heard about it since we began the broadcast so some fog in places primarily to the east. here is your forecast for today. could set a record for today. mostly sunny skies, hot, humid, 95 degrees if we get to 95. that is a new record for the day. the record high for today is 94 set back in 1970. then for tonight, warm, clear skies, a mild overnight but 70 degrees for your low in town. that is not particularly low. some of you will get down to the 60s. here is your interesting five- day forecast. changes, man. after a few days in the 90s tomorrow, mid-80s, good amount of sunshine. going to feel great. i think tomorrow will be a good day. sunday, we get some clouds moving in. it will be a comfortable temperature, 75 degrees but we will likely get some rain showers developing the latter part of sunday and then there is a chance of some much-needed rain monday and tuesday. highs only in the 70s.

that is a look at what is happening with the weather. now, let's get a look at the traffic situation. for that, we go to julie wright. >> we'll talk about southeast washington right now. police chase ended in branch avenue, randall circle in southeast washington. we've got that intersection completely blocked right now, no problems to report top stretch of the beltway between college park and bethesda. no trouble spots to report on 66 as you merge in from fair oaks headed eastbound towards vienna. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. hundreds of millions of dollars just sitting in virginia coffers. the discovery made at an independent audit. the cash slated for transportation projects over the past decade. john henrehan with more details on how governor mcdonnell is making sure no dollar gets left behind. >> reporter: on paper, the virginia department of transportation spends about $3.3 bill wrong a leer constructing and maintaining

the highways and secondary roads of the commonwealth. but a four-month long audit of the agency by a team of cpas in richmond has discovered hundreds of millions of dollars in unspent accounts. example, in the early part of the decade, v-d.o.t. kept about 3.5% of its allocated money in a carryover account for the next year. by fy 2010, v-d.o.t. was carrying over almost 32% of its allocated funds. >> there has been money sitting in accounts and has not been proper le delloyd. i would say there has been money sitting in accounts while people have been sitting in traffic. >> reporter: governor mcdonnell has ordered them to spend down much of the money they have kept in reserve. >> i want to get the hot lanes on 95 built as soon as possible. we are trying to do everything we can to resolve this lawsuit

and get that done. make no sense to have hot lanes from tyson's to the mixing bowl to run into another traffic jam. you got to get them built from the 14th street bridge to occoquan. that is a top priority. >> reporter: another mcdonnell priority, expanding i-66 outside the beltway. one of governor mcdonnell's proposals is to limit some of the carryover money to an estimated 60-day need. democrat you can delegate vivian watts says that is not enough of a cushion in tough fiscal times. she thinks that that is partly how california got in its current fiscal mess. so expect some push-back from some legislators on the governor's plan to rapidly accelerate highway spending. john henrehan, fox 5 news. >> thank you, john. plenty ahead on fox 5 morning news including a big catch at the box office. >> catfish hits theaters this weekend. allison seymour sat down with

there is a new movie out called catfish and it is hitting theaters nationwide. it is an interesting film about internet relationships. this unusual documentary is being compared to effect from

the blair witch project to the new spoof, i'm still here. >> allison seymour had a chance to talk with the star of the film and the filmmakers. >> my brother and henry are film makers and i'm a photographer and we share an office. they were busy working on a number of projects but one was a disturbance film and i was the sort of set photographer. i took a photograph that was published in a couple papers and a young girl in michigan saw it, wrote me an e-mail asking if she could paint a portrait of my photo. she sent me this watercolor. i started sort her, her mom and we became internet pen pals. over the course of the next few months, i fell in love with her older, beautiful sister who is also very talented and artistic. after nine months of them start of following autopsy and so indicationally filming little clips here and there, the story took an interesting twist and got a little dark and we became somewhat suspicious so we took

a road trip to michigan to discover the truth about this family. >> and that is the big twist which i'm sure you will not it would us which is fine because we want it see it for ourself. it is called a reality thriller. he take it that is where that came from. what are the sad as reality got that twist in the end. >> it is not a horror movie. >> it does have some very scary moments and we just want people to go into the movie peeling the same -- feeling the same way we did which was never knowing which way it would turn. it ends up being a powerful experience for all three of us. >> everything we do today, it is like straight to twitter, fa some movies are reflecting that, including yours. do you think as film makers will this become more i have a trend integrating what is happening in our real life with what is happening on the big screen. >> i think so. i think you will see the love affairs and the stories take

airport, it is 73 degrees. 73 at reagan national. relative humidity, 90%. our winds are calm. hence the fog. barometric pressure, 30.11. here is a look at the satellite- radar. our satellite-radar never does a good job of capturing fog. it is mostly clear except for the fog. once that burns off, you will see mostly clear skies. mostly sunny today, as a matter of fact. hot and humid. high about 95 degrees. it will be like summertime, folks. enjoy it. if we get to 95, it will be a record high for the day. let's check in with julie wright and feigned out what is going on in her world. >> not really anything happening north of town. it is pretty quiet. the beltway runs smoothly

between college park and the exit for 270. again, overnight construct at 124 cleared. no-- overnight construction at 124 cleared. we are doling with a little bit of fog on the east side of town. investigators are back on the scene of a devastating fire in manassas. three homes reduced to rubble. fortunately, everybody made it out alive but some of their

precious memories gone forever. our bob barnard has the story. >> reporter: this view from sky fox shows you the devastating nature of this fire. three homes side by side up in flames. scores of firefighters virtually powerless to stop it before the damage was done. investigators believe the fire started in the middle house and then quickly spread in both directions. >> it is beyond the expression in words. >> reporter: two people suffered minor injuries but no firefighters were hurt. one woman was hospitalized from the shock of seeing this, her home basically destroyed. this is her husband. >> it was real bad, you know. we got outside, everybody. >> reporter: their friends say all their memories and effect inside the house is destroyed. >> they couldn't save anything. >> the flame and heat spreading quickly. >> you need a lot of swat are and hoses and a lot of personnel to control it. >> leon buckley says 120 firefighters helped to battle

this one including units from fairfax and prince william county. the manassas mayor and other city officials say they can't believe what they are seeing. >> obviously, we are looking for find out what the impact is going to be and what the cause was. >> reporter: fire investigators say finding the cause will take some work. impact is already being felt. >> we had around 14 to 16 residents that are displaced and they are being held up at the local community center and then red cross arrangements for them. >> reporter: bob barnard, fox 5 news. virginia executed a woman last night. it is the first in a century. 41-year-old theresa lewis died by lethal injection at the greensville correctional center in jarrett. families of her victims actually aattended the execution. lewis pleaded guilty to plotting the murders of her husband and stepson but her lawyers questioned her

drug. the fta will allow patients to get a prescription for it but only if they cannot control their blood sugar with other medicine. actress lindsay lohan is due in court today to find out whether or not whr she will have to go back to jail. the 4-year-old admittedded to failing a court-ordered drug test last week. lohan tested positive for cocaine which violated her bail conditions in a drunk driving case. that case landed her in jail for 13 days and into a detox program afterwards. officials says her latest offense could send her back in jail for 30 days. katie perry's performance on an upcoming episode of sesame street will never air. complaints about the singer's revealing outfit began to spread after the clip of her on the show popped up on the internet. her appearance was yanked. perry says she enjoyed her time on sesame treat. -- street. can you check it out for

talk, you would be inspired to do more, to be more, to build more, to drink more? we got a tip that some chrysler workers were using their lunch break to catch a buzz. so we started following them just five days after president obama's visit and caught them day after day hitting up the party store and then hitting the public park to pound beers. and did i mention a little smoking? the day shift at jefferson north starts at 6:00 a.m. at 11:00 a.m., there is a half hour lunch break. the partiers have just enough time to head up to the liquor store, drive about a mile to the park being consume for 10 minutes and get back to the plant in time to work the last three hours of their shift. tuesday, september 14, 10:57 a.m. here comes our crew out for break. now at the party store, 11:07 hitting the coolers for some liquid refreshment.
